Threads Character Counter
Meta's Threads caps posts at 500 characters — close to twice Twitter's 280 but well under Mastodon's instance-defined limits. Bios mirror Instagram at 150 characters. The counter below tracks every visible character.

Why does Threads have this character limit?
Threads launched in July 2023 with a 500-character limit, positioning it between Twitter's terse 280 and the long-form room of LinkedIn or Mastodon. Meta has kept the limit stable to encourage threaded conversations rather than monolithic posts. The character ceiling forces users to make the same compression-versus-clarity trade-offs that defined early Twitter.
Tips for Writing Better Threads Content
1500 is generous — but don't fill it
Threads posts of 200–300 characters consistently outperform those that hit the cap. Use the room only when you need it.
2Threading replicates Twitter thread strategy
If your idea exceeds 500 characters, post a thread. Replies attach to the original and travel with it through the algorithm.
3Cross-posting from Instagram saves time
Threads lets you cross-post a Threads-style version of an Instagram caption automatically. Tune the 500-character version separately.
4Bio: 150 characters — same as Instagram
Your Threads bio is independent from Instagram's but follows the same length rules. Use it for what you do on Threads specifically.
5Use line breaks generously
Threads renders consecutive newlines as paragraphs. Short paragraphs beat walls of text for readability.
