Why does Reddit have this character limit?

Reddit's 300-character title limit was set in 2015 (up from the original 100) to accommodate longer, more descriptive titles common to communities like r/AskReddit and r/explainlikeimfive. The 40,000-character body limit covers virtually any long-form essay or technical post. Comments stay tighter at 10,000 to keep threads scannable.

Tips for Writing Better Reddit Content

1Titles do all the work

Reddit posts succeed or fail on the title. The title is what scrollers see; the body is bonus. Spend 80% of your post effort on the title.

2Front-load the surprising detail

Reddit users scroll fast. The first 60 characters of your title decide whether they stop. Lead with the most concrete or counterintuitive piece.

3Use markdown — it counts

Reddit posts and comments support markdown. **Bold**, *italic*, and [link text](url) all count character by character toward your limit.

4Avoid clickbait in r/serious communities

Many subreddits explicitly ban clickbait titles. 'You won't believe…' titles get removed by moderators in seconds.

5Comments under 200 characters get more upvotes

Reddit voting data shows top comments cluster around 100–200 characters — long enough to add value, short enough to scan.
