Affect vs Effect: What's the Difference?

Affect is almost always a verb meaning 'to influence.' Effect is almost always a noun meaning 'a result.' If you can swap the word for 'influence' (verb), use affect. If you can swap it for 'result' (noun), use effect.

Why Are They Confused?

Both words sound nearly identical and both deal with cause-and-effect relationships. To make it harder, each word has a less common usage: 'effect' can also be a verb meaning 'to bring about' (as in 'to effect change'), and 'affect' can be a noun in psychology meaning 'observable emotion.' Stick to the main rule — affect = verb, effect = noun — and you'll be right 95% of the time.
