How the PDF Word Counter Works

When you upload a PDF, the tool extracts text content from every page using a JavaScript PDF parser (pdf.js). The extracted text is split on whitespace boundaries and counted as words. Punctuation is stripped from word boundaries; hyphens within words count as one word (following editorial convention).

Tips & Notes

1Editing word limits

Many publishers, journals, and grant agencies impose strict word limits on PDF submissions. Use this tool to verify your draft before submitting.

2Translation pricing

Most translators bill per source word. An accurate PDF word count makes for accurate quotes.

3Academic word counts

If your thesis or dissertation has a 50,000-word limit and you're working in a PDF, this tool gives you the verified count.

4Works offline once loaded

After the first load, the PDF parser is cached in your browser. Subsequent uses work even with no internet.

FAQ

The count splits on whitespace, matching the method used by Word and Google Docs. For typical PDFs, accuracy is within 1–2% of those tools.
