There is no definitive answer, but the most common estimate is that English contains between 170,000 and 1,000,000 words, depending on how you count. The Oxford English Dictionary lists 273,000 headwords. The Global Language Monitor puts the working total at over 1,000,000 when you include scientific and technical vocabulary.
Why nobody can agree on the number
The answer depends on three questions:
- Do you count obsolete words? The OED includes ~47,000 obsolete entries.
- Do you count technical terms? Chemistry alone has tens of thousands of unique chemical names.
- Do you count inflections? "Run," "runs," "running," and "ran" — one word or four?
Three common counts
- Oxford English Dictionary: 273,000 main headwords
- Webster's Third New International Dictionary: 470,000 entries
- Global Language Monitor: ~1,053,000 words (estimated, includes neologisms)
How many words does the average English speaker know?
Native adult English speakers actively use about 20,000–35,000 words. Their passive vocabulary — words they understand but rarely use — adds another 10,000–20,000. So a fluent adult is working with roughly 50,000 words total.
How many words do you need to be fluent?
- Survival: 500 words gets you through basic situations
- Conversational: 3,000 words covers ~95% of everyday speech
- Fluent: 10,000 words handles most contexts comfortably
- Educated native: 20,000–35,000 active words
