There is no definitive answer, but the most common estimate is that English contains between 170,000 and 1,000,000 words, depending on how you count. The Oxford English Dictionary lists 273,000 headwords. The Global Language Monitor puts the working total at over 1,000,000 when you include scientific and technical vocabulary.

Why nobody can agree on the number

The answer depends on three questions:

• Do you count obsolete words? The OED includes ~47,000 obsolete entries.
• Do you count technical terms? Chemistry alone has tens of thousands of unique chemical names.
• Do you count inflections? "Run," "runs," "running," and "ran" — one word or four?
